To really enjoy the pleasures of Singapore, a traveler with little time, should spend d the day at Sentosa – the country’s holiday island. Once a British military base, this island which name means ‘peace’ in the Malay tongue, offers more sights to see and things to do, than any place else in Singapore. From white sandy beaches to historic sites to lush green parks and luxury hotels to romantic nightlife, Sentosa has them all. A trip through the island is a never-ending adventure – as Singaporean says, ‘at Sentosa, the fun never ends.’ A causeway can reach the island via ferries or overland. On the other hand, the ideal way to appreciate this pleasure ground of the country is via the Cable Car. The car leaves Mount Faber, the second highest point in Singapore and, as it moves along, offers a panoramic view of the harbor – the busiest port in the world. Like a good number of visitors to that island country, P did not have much time to spend in this city-state. Hence, I joined a half-day tour to Sentosa and I was disappointed.

Even more than the tourist literature indicated, the Cable Car view of the port, was fantastic. As our Cable Car descended to it’s terminal on the island, the first object that caught my eye was the 37 m (121 ft) high in Merlion, a half-lion, half-mermaid fantasy creature which is the symbol of Singapore. At night, this tourist attraction par-excellence, standing on a hill in the center of Sentosa, comes alive during a spectacular light, sound and water extravaganza, Staged three times a night, the Rise of the Merlion show features a spectacle of color lasers shooting from the eyes of the Merlion in synchronization with the symphony of dancing water fountains. Visitors can enter the Merlion, and then ride to the viewing decks in its mouth or those at the crown. From high point, they can enjoy breathtaking views of Singapore harbor, the surrounding islands and, if the day is clear, the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia. On the edge of the Sentosa cable car terminal, we toured the Images of Singapore Museum which includes the saga of Singapore’s pioneers, the Second World war Surrender Chambers, capturing the humiliation of defeat and the joy of victory, and an exhibition of the city’s festival.

I thought how much more fulfilling it would have been if I had explored Sentosa for at least another day. Nevertheless, I had a taste of what Singapore’s holiday isle had no offer – and the flavors were many.

The Singapore Sling was created at the world-famous Raffles Hotel in 1915 by a Hainanese-Chinese bartender. The “Sling’s attractive blush made it popular among the ladies and has since become a signature drink of the hotel and country, without which a trip to Singapore in incomplete. Today, the drink is enjoyed by all and can be found in most bars around the world.

Spice up your cocktail parties by making your very own Singapore Sling. In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine one-half measure of gin, one-quarter cherry brandy, and one quarter mixed fruit juices (orange, lime or lemon, and pineapple). Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Add a few drops of Cointreau & Benedictine and Angostura Bitters into the drink and top with a cherry and a slice of pineapple.

To most people, the very idea of entering a cave can elicit one of two emotions: the thrill of adventure or sheer dread and terror. The pitch-black corridors, seemingly bottomless pits, bats and other indescribable fears are enough to make some break out in cold sweat. On the other hand, the mystery of caves beckons, drawing out the same interest, as one would have about our neighbor’s house; we’d like to go in and look around just to satisfy our nagging curiosity.

Technology has enabled man to map and scan almost every corner of the planet. You can get a satellite map of any mountain summit before you even set foot on its slopes. Sonar can give us an idea of the canyons and basins that make up our ocean bottom. But to know what a particular cave looks like, you have to go in and see it for yourself. You have to physically survey and map the cave, plumb its depths and set your eyes on its wonders.

Caves are testament to both the power and patience of water. Naturally, acidic rain reacts with limestone, the most ideal type of rock for cave information, by dissolving it bit by bit. The water seeks weakness in the rock, cracks and seams that will allow it to drip and flow. Over time, this relentless attack by rain together with the unpredictable changes in the limestone structure creates vast networks of corridors, tunnels and rooms both tiny immense, with neither patter nor order. Passages cross over each other without ever meeting, and small openings can lead to huge galleries big enough to swallow a stadium. The dissolved limestone flows into the cave, dripping and flowing to form incredibly beautiful and intricate sculptures, some as delicate as spider webs and other robust and huge as Greek columns. Over the centuries, what started as a slight trickle will eventually become a sparkling curtain of translucent crystals? The Philippines has all the ingredients for making great caves: it has large deposits of limestone and even larger amounts of rains.
